A self taught and instinctive artist, residing in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges. My practice is focused on pop / street / urban culture based works, with distinctive nostalgic and childhood iconic references and twists.
As a resident of the Macedon Ranges in Victoria; here I have the mental and physical space to instinctively create art without distraction – within the confines of our rustic farm shed. I cannot think of a better place to create!
A self taught and instinctive artist, my practice started in my early thirties – which was a dramatic shift from a background which had a distinct lack of artistic influence or drivers. Since then, my practice has evolved from small surrealist works, to large figurative and abstracts, and now a range of pop / street / urban culture based works. These works are my ‘groove’ and my practice is constantly evolving from what comes to mind.
I use hand made (my me!) solid timber frames and solid timber panels which are all sourced from local hardware stores. The compositions are a mixture of found images in print or online, self drawn motifs and figures; overlaid with acrylic spray, acrylic paint, sharpies and the occasional watercolour. The main influence for my work is to reference images and memories, nostalgia and pop culture which resonate with the viewer. There is minimal pre-planning to my work as it forms spontaneously; is then printed, pasted using traditional street based techniques, and finally hand painted and embelished.
I cannot say that there is a main external driver to create art, its really something that comes naturally and evolves when I have the urge to create something.
If my work evokes a positive feeling, a sense of nostalgia and/or a memory that you resonate with and that brings a smile, then I have achieved all that I set out to achieve 🙂
