I’m a Brisbane based artist who specialises in painting with Gouache, mixed with other media, on 100% cotton paper. I love lines, colour and light and this is reflected in what inspires my paintings. Currently my focus is on exploring the strength and delicacy of Australian Native Flowers.
My name is Leah Gay and I’m passionate about colour, lines and texture and painting with gouache.
Becoming a parent has led me down a path of paying better attention to the little details that are beautiful and taken for granted in our lives. The things we just know, see everyday or just plain ignore. My attention flirts from the threads of a common native flower, the light upon Moreton Bay at sunset or a striking line of the human form. Currently I’m giving my attention to the amazing array of native flowers in my garden and local suburban streets.
The velvety texture of gouache first captured me in high school and although I’ve dabbled in other mediums, I can’t move past the versatility and beauty that this medium brings to paintings. Over the past two and a bit decades I’ve combined it with many other mediums, including oil pastel and coloured pencil. Currently though, I’m pushing the medium into unchartered territory and mixing it with embroidery on cotton paper.
Over the past few years I’ve been engaged in my art practice more seriously and have participated in a number of local group exhibitions in Brisbane. In 2019 I won the People’s Choice award for the 40th Rotary Art Spectacular Brisbane and the 7th Annual Community 4017 Art Show. I will be holding my first solo show in 2020.
My paintings can be found in private collections around the world including Australia, Canada, Norway, Sweden, England and the USA.
When I’m not creating you’ll find me juggle family life with a three year old boy who loves to create as much as his Mum, and working in our family business with my husband. I was born and grew up in Melbourne, but currently live by the water, north of Brisbane, and am constantly delighted by the magical colours and light of the sunsets and rain storms.
