Hi, I’m Helen Shadforth, an artist and designer living on the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland. For the past 20 years I have been a successful graphic designer working both in Australia and abroad and later went on to starting my own design house. I completed my Diploma of Graphic Design back in 1999, when things were more hands on ‘old school’ and less digital. Over the years though I have embraced technology and see it as just another medium in which to create my work.
I have been a creative for as long as I can remember, always doodling, sketching, painting and creating. I consider myself lucky to have a career doing what I love and to have an audience who enjoys and can connect with my work.
My current paintings are a result of the time I have spent using art as a form of therapy. This recent work comes from a much more personal and emotional place than my previous projects. I am painting pieces that I truly love and feel. Heavily influenced by people that surround me and whom I am close to. I gather my inspiration from ancient and tribal art, as well as nature, colour, patterns and symbolism. The time I have spent travelling over the years has taught me the different way many cultures tell their story through art.
At the moment my medium of choice is acrylic on canvas but I also often paint with oils, watercolour and gouache. I design patterns digitally using a tablet and also often begin many of my new ideas sketching digitally.
