Elizabeth Varley

Burrawang NSW Australia

Elizabeth art shows how everyday objects are rendered using traditional techniques and a tonal palate. She is keen to explore the relationship of objects to each other and how light falls onto them. Tonality is the quality of a tone, the combination of colours used in a painting, or how the tones of a musical composition are combined. In art, tone refers to the degree of lightness or darkness of an area. Tone varies from the bright white of a light source through shades of grey to the deepest black shadows. Using tonality in a painting, the artist does not need the use a wide range of colours and the use of tonality achieves a restful and unified paintings.

About Elizabeth Varley

Elizabeth relocated from Sydney to the Southern Highlands in 2013. Previously she was the Managing Director of a successful Sydney-based human resources consultancy. The sale of her business saw Elizabeth enjoying an extensive overseas journey discovering what life could hold away from the challenging world of commerce. Her travels took her to the UK, Scandinavia, Africa and Italy. While in Italy Elizabeth undertook photography tuition with Chris Corradino – a world recognised photographer and teacher, and painting classes with professional artists and teachers Lynn Stender and Pat Fiorello. On returning to Australia, Elizabeth commenced classes at the Bowral Art Gallery (BDAS) in 2013 with well-known local artist and teacher – Tracey Miller. Initially, she attended drawing classes developing her skills with graphite and pastels and then progressing to painting with acrylics. Since 2015 Elizabeth has been studying with Wayne Davis – an award winning artist, teacher and mentor. Under Wayne’s guidance, Elizabeth has broadened and refined her painting techniques and has developed a growing love of oils. Elizabeth’s artworks have been shown in a number of shows and exhibitions in the Southern Highlands. Recently she was a finalist in the Pirtek Still Life competition in 2016, 2017 and 2019.
