Andrew Truscott is a British born wood sculptor producing some of the finest and most unique works to be created from Western Australian Iconic Jarrah. Andrew’s delicately exquisite sculptural work has an ethereal elegance and a playfully tactile quality. He carefully juxtaposes the rough, nature hewn surface with highly smoothed and sensual polished finishes.
Andrew is one of only a handful of sculptors in the world to attempt to create artworks using Jarrah. This unique Australian hardwood that grows only in the Southwest corner of Western Australia is renowned for its versatility, its durability and strength and rich array of deep reds. The heartwood varies in colour from rich reds to browns, while sapwood ranges from a pale yellow to orange. The texture of the timber is moderately coarse and even-textured grain, although some interlocked, wavy grain may feature, creating interesting fiddle-back figure.
Using roots, stumps, logs and sometimes even lightning petrified pieces on the forest floor is the first step. “The hunt itself in search of the perfect piece of wood is the start of the artistic process,” Nature is always the first sculptor and I step in and finish it off for her, we are a team”
