Additional Information

Australian Tawny Frogmouth birds form a partnership for life and like to live in the same location for many years. This artwork was inspired by a family of Frogmouths perched in a tree in my garden. Luckily, I have a terraced garden and with my digital camera I was able take a picture looking eye to eye with the birds. I was surprised that they let me come so close to take their family portrait.

When I studied the image I’d taken, I was captivated by the three different expressions in the eyes of each bird. The parents are clearly warning me to back away from their little one sitting in the middle.

In the painting I like to think the dad is the one on the left and mum is on the right. However, it’s not the parent’s expression of wisdom that inspired me to paint this, it’s the expression of wide-eyed wonder in the baby frogmouth that has captured my heart for a lifetime.
