Wabi-sabi 侘寂, Longing

It is said that wabi-sabi is the feeling that stirs a wistful, sad melancholy close enough to spiritual longing. It is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete”. It is a concept derived from the Buddhist teaching of the three marks of existence, specifically impermanence, suffering and emptiness or absence of self-nature. Characteristics of the wabi-sabi aesthetic include asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, and appreciation of the ingenuous integrity of natural objects and processes.

This imperfect, incomplete, textured canvas seemed doomed after several attempts to turn it into a normal ‘painting’. When I stopped trying and let the paint find it’s groove, it began to track in a way that suggested the incompleteness of self-nature. I’m chuffed with this painting.
Moon setting, a crow caws, the sky filled with frost
Maples by the river, fishermen’s lights, the traveler faces a sad sleep
Outside City of Suchow, from the Cold Mountain Temple
Sound of the midnight bell reaches the traveler’s boat

76x61x3 quality, textured canvas, ready to hang with satin varnish protection
