While working on a series of paintings on the Wild Oxley River National park Near Armidale, a friend recently back from a trip to the Himalayas showed me some extraordinary images on the Kali Gandaki River Gorge near Nepal. The power and grandeur of these lofty misty mountains with the turquoise river carving its path below was just breathtaking.  The gorge demands a certain reverence synonymous with the ancient Chinese paintings where man is depicted as insignificant within the landscape whose looming presence is all dominant.

I painted this Impressionist work in oils with strong vertical strokes to depict the enormous scale of the gorge walls and wild ruggedness of the terrain.

This painting won first prize in the Sawtell Art Prize 2018 recently.
