Additional Information

Fishing is a hit and miss affair for most of us at the best of times and my family is no exception. One afternoon we were moored up at Tiger Mullet where there were perfect conditions for fishing. The boys, (ten and twelve years old at the time) were determined to catch fish for dinner. They were so full of youthful optimism, that even my husband and I, ( a little more jaded and cynical with years of empty eski’s under our belt) were beginning to toy with visions of pan seared snapper with burnt butter and herb salad, or…… perhaps baked whiting fillets with a lemon and dill sauce, or gosh…even….   a whole baked snapper….with ripe cherry tomatoes…yum…handful black olives…hang on….I’m getting ahead of myself. Half an hour or so went by with very little action, but three pelicans had appeared and began circling the boat, often drifting in quite close, probably drawn by the smell of the live bait..yabbies of course. Quite unexpectedly, one of the boys somehow managed to snag a feisty little snapper and as he was reeling it in, squealing with excitement and surprise, one of the pelicans swooped it and plucked it from the line, as we all stood by congratulating my son!

This story has been a source of family amusement for years, and I used it for inspiration for this piece. Pelicans are goofy and have quirky little personalities making them one of my favourite birds to paint. At times, they are genuine sticky beaks, and while being amazing ‘fishermen’ themselves, they are quite happy to hang around while you do all the work, and then make off with your catch as soon as your back is turned. This painting is big, bright and in all the beach colours. The sides are painted, it’s varnished and ready to hang.
