  • Sobre Palacio Lapido

Additional Information

For “Sobre Palacio Lapido”  I decided on a simple, graphic composition inspired by travel posters of the 1920s and ’30s. Conceptually I wanted the deep blues plus the tension created by the perceived fulcrum point between the Zeppelin and the building to draw the viewer to up into the sky.  “Sobre Palacio Lapido” is an original oil on canvas painting which I began in 2016 and completed in 2018 upon my return to Australia.

The Graf Zeppelin visited Uruguay’s capital city Montevideo in 1934. There are many photos of it over the city and the Rio de la Plata (River Plate), and above Montevideo’s most famous building the Palacio Salvo in the Plaza Independencia. About two hundred metres from the Palacio Salvo, up the central Avenida 18 de Julio, stands the majestic Palacio Lapido which was completed in 1933. The Palacio Lapido is considered to be one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in South America. The enormous Zeppelin was at least 40 metres longer than the distance between the two famous buildings and would certainly have passed over it on its passage down the avenida (avenue).

I decided to paint “Sobre Palacio Lapido” while working on my surrealist time warp painting of the Graf Zeppelin “Reflejo Dos – Break on Through”, which was completed in 2012.

Shipped rolled in tube, requires stretching or framing by purchaser.
