  • Pelican Framed 2019

Additional Information

A pastel drawing of a pelican.

My approach to a drawing is to use pastels to lightly paint a loose impression of the subject on the paper surface. I then spend many hours creating and embellishing the details as needed with a combination of pastel pencils or coloured pencils.

The challenge with each piece is to show the viewer something of the life behind the image. To do this, I try to capture the play of light in the eyes and the sense of movement in the body. Slightly differing patterns of pencil marks can convey either an animal’s relaxed state or tension.

The subject must “come to life” before I am satisfied and can call it complete.

In this piece, I have used a combination of pan pastels and pastel pencils on black pastel paper to create this monochrome pelican profile.

Based on a reference photo from Julie Holland.

This artwork has been professionally framed and is ready to hang.
