Additional Information

This figurative landscape painting “Of Noble Aspirations”  continues in the style and influence of the Renaissance/Rococo period and

used as a vehicle to express fading ideals of our contemporary society.

These eras in the arts were ones of heightened innovation and enlightenment, the Rococo being highly decorative and

often portraying scenes from Greek mythology.

Within this work the movement and ascending positions of the figures represent placing our ideals and aspirations of life into action.

Being fortunate in recent years to have visited the Palace of Versailles and grand cathedrals of Italy, the ceiling murals in particular

are incredible with luminous heroic figures from classic myths springing forth into a circular orb of heavenly light. These mythic tales

of gods and mere men were used as a moral compass for society throughout the ages but to me they also represented the birth of great

and lofty ideas.

Within the drama of the shadowy bordering figures, it is my intention for the viewers gaze to be funneled up into the central

luminous sky as if in those domed ceilings.

Painted in loose brushstrokes with the emphasis on strong light and shadows, I rely on the underpainting at times to seep through giving the

appearance of spontaneity and depth.

This work is painted in both oil and acrylic on canvas.
