“Let Go” is an expression of freedom and inner peace. In this work there is a naked and bare woman who is letting her hair flow freely in the beneath grass surrounding her. Unlike many of my other paintings in my Contentment series, the main focus here is this woman’s face, her eyes and contentment with her own piece of mind. The focus is on her mental freedom and less of a freedom in her body image. This was an important work to create, as i wanted to highlight that for a woman, to be content in her own skin, she needs mental clarity, freedom and also body acceptance. Often, contentment is not achieved because of our own insecurities. We often view these insecurities as physical aspects of our being. But really they incorporate a persons mental and spiritual well being.
Oil canvas with layered paint. I started out by putting down base colours and then building up the skin colour and highlights in both the grass and face. The grass was mainly worked on using a similar technique to Pre-Raphaelite translucent colours. Which meant i built up the grass colour through glazes, imitating the effect of light falling on a subject and gives a depth that cannot be obtained by using colours mixed on a palette.
