The full title of my curious little subject is the Satanic Leaf-tailed Gecko, an unjustly uncomplimentary descriptive of a spritely little amphibian that is anything BUT demonic! My inspiration for this marvellous little creature was the technical challenge he posed – in truth it was an art work that took me more than 3 months to complete and every single day I engaged in a dogged internal dialogue to scrap it altogether. It was just too hard, I told myself. Way above my ‘pay grade’ as an artist. I became well acquainted with frustration, defeat, exasperation and good old fashioned tantrums.
However, tenacity prevailed and breakthrough was achieved. The technical difficulty and minuscule subtleties I persevered with during production proved highly painful – until I realized that with pain comes growth – and I made several strides upward in my pursuit of artistic improvement during the course of this one piece.
The Leaf-tailed Gecko is a fun image (though not a lot of fun was had when wrestling with it in the early stages!) – a curious little lizard with a most scurrilous and mischievous deportment. The delicate reed up which he has scrambled easily supports the scarce few grams that he weighs. What is he craning his neck to see in the distance? A grasshopper? A noise that both startled and intrigued him? Or is he merely pondering what lies beyond the unknown horizon ahead?
