A pastel drawing of a kingfisher in flight.

My approach to a drawing is to use pastels to lightly paint a loose impression of the subject on the paper surface. I then spend many hours creating and embellishing the details as needed with a combination of pastel pencils or coloured pencils.

The challenge with each piece is to show the viewer something of the life behind the image. To do this, I try to capture the play of light in the eyes and the sense of movement in the body. Slightly differing patterns of pencil marks can convey either an animal’s relaxed state or tension.

The subject must “come to life” before I am satisfied and can call it complete.

One of my favourite drawings, this piece included two things I enjoy drawing the most…birds and bubbles. The tan background highlights the amazing blues and greens of the kingfisher’s plumage.

This drawing was exhibited at the 2017 Sydney Royal Easter Show and was selected to be featured in the internationally recognised coloured pencil publication Ann Kulberg’s CP Treasures V.

Note: This artwork has been professionally framed to exhibition standard. The dimensions of the framed work are 69cm x 54cm.

I have included photos of the framed piece as well as a work in progress photo to show how the drawing progressed.
