Horsehead Nebula emerged as a much revisited subject matter early in my artistic career when I became acquainted with the near unbelievable marvels captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. The universe (whilst expanding on a scientifically factual scale by the second) suddenly expanded in my mind. Planets, moons, stars and comets suddenly found themselves competing for my attention with quasars, nebulae, galaxies and event horizons of inexplicable complexity and beauty.
It is not hard to imagine how the works of the great Carl Sagan, Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke were inspired. The discoveries of deep space have not merely encouraged scientists to invest more in fringe science to understand and explain the celestial inexplicable, it awakened poets, activated artists and captivated the unlimited imagination of children.
Horsehead Nebula is a reminder that for all of our frontier pioneering in space, we have perhaps discovered so little about what there is to know as to be negligible.
Horsehead Nebula invites to viewer to consider that whilst it may appear in a single photographic Hubble frame, it must be viewed from so many millions of lights years distant to enable a single frame to encapsulate its incomprehensible enormity. The viewer is challenged to look upon this small piece whilst attempting to reconcile themselves with its leviathan reality.
