Additional Information

The traffic inspector was checking the Harley Davidson parked on the road when a Gold Coast Bright Event happened to me. My attention was diverted by the bright morning light bouncing off the curved concrete balconies of the Surfers International Resort building.

As I took the picture the parking inspector moved on without writing a ticket for the bike. I tapped my shirt pocket, yes, my ticket was still there for an Eventbrite Conference at the Mantra Legends Hotel. I glanced at my watch, 7:40 am, the sun was making its way into the blue cloudless sky. The sky scrapers were glistening in the warm morning sun as I made my way onto the Hanlan Street promenade.

A happy feeling surged through me as I thought of the family holidays spent on the Gold Coast. When I think of Surfers Paradise the colours pink, yellow and blue come to mind. The bright colours are from memories of a family photo taken behind four cardboard cut-outs at the Marineland gift shop in the 1970s. Pink is from a naked mermaid’s body and King Neptune ‘s bulbous stomach. Yellow is from a buccaneer who is wearing a bright yellow sash around his waist. Silver-grey comes from the figure of an old fashion diver’s suite complete with metal helmet. The cut-outs were surrounded by a bright blue water background complete with tropical fish, shark and a sunken sailing ship.

After attending the Conference, I was drawn back to this image of a building captured at the start of a new day. Although it’s a modern building — the shape of the balconies reminds me of Surfers Paradise in the early 1970s. So I added the colours pink and yellow to the building in the foreground of the painting. The antenna on the pink wall is a nostalgic reminder for me of the TV aerial on top of our black and white Pye TV.
