Additional Information

Located on the Scottish Island of Staffa, this sea cave evokes images of fantasy worlds, with its hexagonal basalt pillars and enormous cavern.
The unearthly sounds which echo throughout, led to Mendelssohn creating his “Hebridean Overture”
Turner painted it and Jules Verne, John Keats and Queen Victoria all visited it via paddle steamers. It was named Fingal’s Cave to preserve the memory of an ancient Irish general, who’s story mimicked King Arthur’s.

Part of a verse William Wordsworth penned after his visit. 1770.

“ the pillared vestibule,
Expanding, yet precise, the roof embowed.
Might be seen to humble man when proud of his best workmanship by plan or tool……
Down-bearing with his whole Atlantic weight, of tide and tempest on that structures base,
And flashing to that surfaces topmost height,
Ocean has proved it’s strength and of it’s grace, in calms is conscious,
Finding for his freight,
Of softest music some responsive place”
