Female Fairy-wren – a delicate little painting in watercolour, a study of warm brown feathers and cool blue tones.

Usually it’s the brightly-coloured male wrens that get all the glory – I wanted to show the simple, delicate beauty of the female fairy-wren.

I took the reference photo for this painting recently at Brisbane’s Oxley Creek Commons, in the amazing sunset light. I loved the play of blue shadows on the little wren, catching the last warm glow of the sun, and especially how the blue branch shadow fell across her. I was really drawn to the colour and warm/cool contrasts in this image.

23x21cm (including the white space around, where the branch goes outside the blue background area – please consider it part of the painting, as shown in the framed mockups.) Signed on the front.
