Contemplative Beauty is an original watercolour artwork. I am interested in creating a series of portraits and figurative artworks in watercolour this year. I am particularly keen to portray performing artists such as dancers and musicians. I greatly admire their skills, as they are definitely not mine. I literally can’t dance and can’t even clap in time! A friend who can both dance and play musical instruments told me I clap on the off beat (I didn’t know there was an off beat). I came across a copyright free reference photograph of this young woman deep in thought. I loved that she was wearing pointe shoes, but wondered if she was in fact a dancer.  While it is likely that she is, it is equally possible that she is a model wearing pointes just for the photo.  In either case, what direction has the photographer given her? Besides the physical direction which sees her sitting hugging herself, up against a wall, what was the direction for her gaze, her thoughts? It looks almost as though she is trying to protect herself. The dress shields her body and, the indigo blue compliments and contrasts with her fair skin. Is she trying to protect herself from her thoughts and feelings? I’m undecided on what it is that she is thinking. There are no tears, no look of anger but her thoughts are deep. I enjoyed bringing her to life. I hadn’t completed a watercolour figure for a number of years. Now my mind is contemplating many possibilities for future works.

Contemplative Beauty was painted using artist quality Winsor and Newton watercolour paints on acid free Saunders Waterford watercolour paper. It is A3 in size. Contemplative Beauty will need to be framed under glass. As with all artworks it should be hung out of direct sunlight.
