Additional Information

This site in Turkey is commemorated with memorials to both the ANZACS and the Turks who shed their blood and sacrificed their lives at Gallipoli in WW1. It is at one of these monuments, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, revolutionary statesman, founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey (1923-38), made a famous quote about the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation as a way forward for both sides of the war. In the painting, we see Chunuk Bair (the sphinx), as the diggers named it, at Gallipoli and the spirit of the fallen soldier in the sky. The bloodshed is a reminder of the horrors of war in an otherwise peaceful and serene part of the Turkish coastline.
