Ceramic Spirit Sculpture with Hoop Pine Base

The idea for this ceramic spirit sculpture with hoop pine base originates from a variety of sources including Australian Aboriginal and Papua-Neuguinean. However, beyond vaguely connecting to these cultures there is an utterly unique and authentic presence. A highly collectable figure with plenty of attitude and mysterious flavour. The figure stands 29 cm heigh. Arms are crossed, the featureless face creates a powerful impression emphasised by three red, crown-like spikes. Legs are slightly bowed with two ankle rings towards the base. The back shows a peculiar hump decorated with two organic black lines. Made from high-fired terra cotta clay. I have used a proprietorial black glaze which has formed a tactile pattern all over the surface. Red and white highlights add further mystery to this very special piece.

The base comes from a hoop pine tree which was blown over on my farm in a storm. The polished wood shows some boreholes and some branch timber fitting well with the somewhat primitive nature of this work. A fresh fragrance, unique to hoop pine, emits from the base. I love this very special art work and I am confident of its auspicious qualities. It may well bring good fortune and luck into your home.
