Additional Information

From and Iconic black and white photograph to an Australian fine art oil painting filled with colour and laughter. This is when, finally, women could wear swimsuits that were body fitting and showed off lots of skin – wonderfully daring. Now it is perhaps difficult to imagine being excited about knitted woolen swimsuits but at the time women and girls loved them.

This painting brings to life an iconic B & W photograph from the late ’30s of four girls running over a sand dune at Surfers Paradise. They wore the very latest in ladies’ swimsuits.  The material was the new knitted wool that could be better molded to the female form and lent itself well to the daring designs that were coming into fashion. The new freedom plays joyously across each girl. At the time there were even hand knitted swimsuits. The woolen suits took a while to dry but the freedom they gave women and girls was so good after a lifetime of ugly voluminous suits.
