Additional Information

Back in ‘the day’ butchers often went and cut a beast out of someone’s herd, then drove it back to their cutting and hanging shed. On this occasion, the herd was being driven down the Barcoo and the drovers were making moves to settle down at sunset. The butcher’s apprentice had been waiting in the shrub for his chance. He had been charged with bringing back a live carcass and he wasn’t going to let the boss down in case he lost his job.

So Jack made a daring dash to cut one out but was spotted by an outrider. The dog barking, the cattle-hand yelling, the beast snorting and red dust flying up all around them – what a scene! Jack did eventually get another beast for the Boss but our Runaway lived to tell an interesting tale.

This runaway made a fortunate escape!  Back in the Queensland of old, the best way to get cheap, fresh meat was to steal it. Often the butchers went out and ‘borrowed’ an animal from wherever the nearest herd was. It was to meet it’s fate back in the butchering shed. In my painting, the selected animal was far to cunning for the butcher’s lad and the drovers’ dog had a bit to say also.

Style

My painting style is to combine representational images painted in an expressionistic style.  I like to use impasto (loaded brush or knife) to create an added emphasis and hopefully that has played well in this work.

Cattle rustling didn’t pay off this time for the butcher’s apprentice.  The preferred time for cutting out an animal was sunset when drovers and beasts were tired and thinking about having a sleep. Not so the drover’s dogs; they were always on alert.   Professional oils on stretched canvas over timber cradle
