Zebra on White – Common ZebraI came across a captivating herd of Zebra lazily grazing, appearing to take all in their stride, but always ready to run and flee.

A Limited Edition Print (25) fine art photograph by Elizabeth McNamee.

One of the most iconic African animals is the zebra.  Their serenity belies their nature of not being afraid to confront predators. This wild, horse-like animal lives in harems and large herds across Southern and East Africa. Owing primarily to their distinctive striped coats, (no two individuals look exactly alike) a group of zebra is called a ‘dazzle’. This name also refers to a unique phenomenon called “motion dazzle”, an optical illusion that occurs when groups of zebra move quickly together. The black and white stripes can also ward off horse flies since the high contrast patterns make zebras a less attractive target to insects.  It’s an age old question: are zebras white animals with black stripes? Or black animals with white stripes? Cutting-edge genetic research has finally put the argument to rest: zebras are black animals with white stripes.

The plains zebra or common zebra is listed by the IUCN as near threatened, with their populations decreasing. Plains zebras are threatened by habitat loss due to human development and farming. They are vulnerable to hunting throughout their range, especially when they move out of protected areas. Many being hunted for their skins.

The unique story surrounding each animal portrait comes with the print.
