‘Tolai Ring’ by David Kirkland photographer.

The Tolai money ring  is a highly prized possession on the Papua New Guinea island of East New Britain. Tiny shells – thousands of them – are collected and punctured, then strung onto thin pieces of rattan before being bound together to form a giant circle. They come in all sizes. Large ones can be presented as a gift at a bride price ceremony or exchanged for land. A collection of them can establish the owner’s status. I purchased the ring in this photograph which hangs proudly in my home (waiting, some might suggest, for the right woman to come along).

Nola is the Papua New Guinean with the striking features who’s holding the mask in this photo.
