• 470 The Feminist Firebrand, Frances Johnston (1864 1952) (signature)

Additional Information

The Feminist Firebrand, Frances Johnston (1864 -1952) by Kevin Rogers –  Benjamin Johnston was best known as a prolific chronicler of Southern Architecture (USA) and was something of a feminist firebrand in her younger years. The photographer is seen here at age 32 in a triple-threat sendup of the 1890s ‘New Woman’ – Smoking, Drinking and Showing Some Leg.

As artists, most of us hide a rebellious streak in our character and that is why I was drawn to the original photo of Frances who obviously also possessed the same streak.  I just had to create an artwork as an enduring testament to her arbitrary yet strong character.

Permissions to create artwork were sought and given.
