The Demure Regina by REK – continues his finely detailed photo realistic approach in this piece featuring a spectacular wild sulphur crested cockatoo, a collaboration with Danielle Griffith (@SydneyCockatoos – Instagram) – who’s amazing cockatoo photos are taken from her home in Sydney.
Set against REK’s signature fabric backdrop this time emblazoned with tropical pineapples, the wild beauty proudly holds centre stage as she presents the shock of golden crest feathers the breed are famed for . Her eye is a typical example of the skill the artist is known for, using exaggerated amber and deep reds to pull focus.
This artwork has been composed as a diptych with the Regina’s partner (The Alabaster Regent) facing back towards her in the opposite painting.
Elements of this piece such the beak, eye and wrinkled skin contain multiple layers of glazing to create ultra-lifelike depth. The softness and interplay of light and shadow in the cockatoo’s feathers are composed so delicately achieving realistic results in this recent addition to the artist’s ongoing birds of Australia series.
