There are many layers of pattern and colour in this painting. I started with the background and then worked slowly, layer by layer. I wanted to preserve the right amount of texture and pattern allowing it to show through in the final work.

As always, my aim is to capture the emotion of the subjects and I feel that I did this very successfully in this poignant portrait.

There is no bond like that between a Mother and her child.
