‘Terrestrial escape’ by Ian Burgess.

This is my way to explore the ‘feel’ of this earthly world on a colour journey with my choice of bold, saturated hues but without ambiguity as it still remains organic with my choice of medium materials. Although this painting has echoes of the landscape , with no deliberate motifs, my thrust of energy is directed toward the textural aspects with heavy gestural mark making and intuitive meandering with brush and palette knife.

The organic nature is by my use of a tree bark and hand made rice paper collage to impart the tactility my ongoing visualisation demands. The ‘escape’ in the title is my need to paint with strong, vibrant colours even if they are unrealistic!

This work took some time to develop by transferring my initial random shapes and colours into a sense of place and introduce some elemental power that is over and above the mere application of paint.

My method of layering and scraping paint with texture and the overlaying of a light glaze of one colour over the other creates the depth I require, consequently this painting has a fine, unobtrusive Matt finish which gives it a natural vibe.
