Superb Lyrebird Forest Triptych – Original Gouache and watercolour painting on thick textured watercolour paper (Arches).
This large statement work on paper is one of several triptychs I have created of a similar theme. The work comprises 3 separate sheets of heavy cotton paper designed to hang together to form one major work (triptych). Each sheet measures 56cm x 76cm, and the overall size of the work unframed is 168cm x 76cm. Please check out all the images including the styled mock up shots showing 2 different ideas of how to frame this work.
I love to paint our unique Australian flora and fauna in gouache and watercolour on beautiful thick textured papers. I use calligraphy brushes and vary the paint consistency from watery washes to opaque line work – my intention is to create flow and movement within the work by varying the brush line weights.
My layered watercolour paintings explore the line, pattern and colour found in our incredible Aussie flora and fauna, and are influenced by the process and aesthetics of Japanese Block Prints (Ukiyo-e). I like working and presenting my paintings in the triptych format on paper because it reminds me of oriental decorative screens and suits the somewhat “Chinausserie” style of my work. The recurring motifs and decorative elements that have become synonymous with my paintings in the past few years were originally intended as linocut designs. My background is in printmaking /surface pattern which still heavily influences my art practice.
