Additional Information

Sunburnt Country by Chloe Wigg is a celebration of this beautiful land of ours, its harshness but also its complexity.

This work speaks of my childhood in Far North Queensland. It’s about driving north and watching the dirt change from deep umber to burnt iron red. It’s the colour of the grass, brittle and burnt when summer is in full swing. Sitting on the verandah watching the sugar cane fields aflame at sunset, their flames seeming to ignite the sky. This work shows the evolution of colours as the neighbour’s pasture is left to fallow for the year. When I gaze at this artwork I can almost hear the sound of parrotfish crunching away as I snorkel on the reef. In it, I can see the coral flush with colour and the anemone swaying in the current.

I can taste this artwork, the colours take me right to fruit season, trays of plump aromatic mangos given away on the roadside, sharing an entire bucket with my brother, our hands, faces and clothing all an amazing sticky orange mess. I savour the relish of pineapples ripe, sweet and delicious, mum sipping a pina colada and Oma making passion fruit cheesecake.

Two colours, but a thousand memories. That’s what this piece is, above all else, a thousand memories of a sunburnt country. Sunburn Country comprises of over 25 different tones of Yellow and Red – mixing to create a variety of oranges, intertwining with metallics Copper, Gold, Pearl and Bronze. This artwork continues around the edges.
