Striped Bowl Study 2 by Susanne Bianchi

Still Life is one of the principal genres of Western art – the subject matter of a still life painting is anything that does not move or is dead.

In modern art, simple still life arrangements have often been used as a relatively neutral basis for formal experiment. It was a popular feature in many modern art movements such as the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists but it was with Cubism, with its revolutionary new approach by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, that Still Life became exciting.

Pablo Picasso and Gilles Gorriti are two of my favourite artists who both excelled in Still Life.  My goal is to be half as good as they are.  Each time I pick up a brush and dip into paint I strive to reach that target.

My striped bowl studies are exercises in still life and monochrome painting.
