Stinson L-5 by Cathy Gilday This painting came about as a favour to a friend‚ who asked me if I would participate in a local “Art in Aviation day‚” at the Gold Coast Sports Flying Club‚ Jacobs Well. The day was designed to bring artists together with aviators and flying machines. Along with my husband, I preceded to take photos of these magnificent examples from past & present. Even though it was so far from it’s origin with the US armed forces, the sugar cane fields of Jacobs Well provided the perfect backdrop to the vintage Stinson L-5 light observation aircraft. For me, it was the pick of the bunch, even though I wasn’t quite sure why. Perhaps it was the history behind it that appealed to me. Although I painted the plane to scale‚ I did exercise “artistic licence‚” to give the painting my personal touch.
