Short Beaked Echidna –  Waddling towards me, almost crablike this little animal was enchanting to observe as it navigated the rocky ground with surprising agility.

A Limited Edition Print (25) fine art photograph by Elizabeth McNamee.

The Echidna is easily recognized by its sharp spines, short legs and long snout.  Echidnas are very clever, almost as smart as a domestic cat.  Amazingly, they are good swimmers and have been seen crossing rivers and beaches with their snouts in the air like snorkels!

This waddling, well-camouflaged mammal is a very peculiar creature and is Australia’s most widespread native mammal.  You can find echidnas slowly wandering around most habitats, from deserts to rainforests and alpine mountains. To survive extremes in weather echidnas burrow into the soil, hide under vegetation and shelter in hollow logs, rock crevices and in burrows created by wombats or rabbits. If threatened, an echidna will curl into a ball (if on hard ground), lodge itself into a log or rock crevice, or quickly dig a shallow excavation, so that only its sharp spines are exposed – a very effective protection strategy.  Like the platypus, the short-beaked echidna is the only mammal (or monotreme) to lay eggs.

The global population size of the short-beaked echidna has not been quantified. According to the IUCN Red List it is classified as Least Concern (LC).  The short-beaked echidna is widespread and common throughout most of its range with stable population trend. The primary threat to echidnas is habitat loss, especially the loss of fallen logs and tree stumps, and protective understory vegetation. As they move slowly they‘re also vulnerable to being hit by vehicles.

The unique story surrounding each animal portrait comes with the print.
