This is a portrait of Aboriginal Elder and Writer, Gayle Kennedy, which I painted for this year’s Archibald. It didnt get selected, but I wanted to put it here in my portfolio so that you can see I do portraiture.  I like to tell stories in my art and for Gayle, I asked her what was important to her .. she wrote me a list of long red road and desert sky, jack russells, magpies, stars, books, yarning, and other animals.  I wanted to weave as much of those things into this portrait. Seven faces are from different times in her life, and two of the seven are deliberately unfinished to symbolise what is unknown and what may come … the little white figure on the top left hand side just appeared there as I was working, and so I left her. When I showed it to Gayle I said I don’t know who she is, and Gayle said she is a Yuri person, a mischievous spirit … so we left her there .. often when I paint I do not know what will emerge and its always a challenge to decide what should stay.

So, I do commissions for anyone who is interested.
