“Self Isolation” by Sloane Birrell – Photographer
From the “Corona in Nature” Limited Edition Photography Series (2020)
After a State of Emergency was declared in Australia in March 2020, this series developed out of the need to undertake projects whilst in self-isolation.
The ‘Corona in Nature’ series of black and white photographic stills is a direct reference to the appearance of the coronavirus. Thistles with their thorny crowns signify the ‘crown’ of the “corona” virus.
A metaphorical narrative informs the images, utilizing the medical and epidemiological lexicon that has gained mainstream use, and documenting new stereotypes and behaviours that have evolved during the global pandemic.
