Additional Information

Riot is a small, square format contemporary floral art work in acrylic on deep sided stretched cotton duck, featuring a variety of florals against a teal background. This work is unframed but ready to hang. The painting continues around the sides of the canvas.

The inspiration for this painting came from my riotous garden which at certain times of the year spills over with colour and variety. Living in the central west of NSW where it is often dry, I allow my garden to be a riot when it can, if plants propagate and spring up in surprising places I let them be and watch them grow. You cannot tame the environment and have a manicured landscape, so the result when it rains can be surprising and uplifting. I rely solely on tank water so the plants that survive you plant more of and the ones that arrive themselves you let be unless they are harmful weeds. I wanted to create a vibrant coloured painting that depicted the unkempt and abstracted nature of my garden.

The paint was applied with large brushes and fingers using broad, textured strokes for the blossoms and for the greenery and background. Drips and dabs stayed put and add to the abstracted feel of this work. Colours include violet, pink, pale olive green, teal, orange, white, Prussian blue. The result is a contemporary approach to a contemporary, impressionistic floral work.

I love the beauty of floral works and the power they have to bring joy to the viewer. Floral subjects also demand that the artist explore colour and texture combinations.
