This piece should probably be titled ‘Recalibrating After Lockdown’ or ‘Covid 2020’ as I made it after lockdown and as we well know, Covid continued for some time and still is!

This painting is about my love of Payne’s Grey, paring back of details and connecting with nature. Connecting to the landscape is important to me. The dark background is something I’ve wanted to work with and represents how ‘heavy’ things felt at the time of painting it. The white lines of the landscape bring a lightness to the feeling of this piece, hope … ‘it will be ok’. It also reminds me of moonlight, hitting the tops of the mountains.

I needed things to feel simple, life felt uncertain to say the least: one colour with white, and the horizon line grounding me. The lines of this landscape are the horizon line of the view of mountains from my back deck and the clouds in the sky the day I painted it. I couldn’t go anywhere else and connecting to this view always brings people peace.

Some might say that this piece it is a little intense, dark … a bit serious perhaps (hello! 2020!) but it is intrinsically hopeful.
