Additional Information

“Peony Phantasm 1” by Sloane Birrell – Photographer

This image explores the ideas of: Momentary, Fragile, Beauty.

It is about the ephemeralness of the peony flower- a flower that is dormant for most of the year and only blooms for about four weeks. There is much anticipation from gardeners all year for a relatively short blooming span, with spectacularly beautiful blooms.

The Peony, known as the King of Flowers, has long been regarded by Chinese culture as a symbol of wealth, good fortune, happiness and prosperity, and is a common theme in Chinese watercolour painting. However, it is a motif that is loved by many cultures, especially in the traditions of French Chinoiserie that bought the peony to prominence in Europe.

Philosophically, this flower also reminds one that all beauty in life is transitory, and that all things have a time and season.

Hopefully this image inspires a sense of calm, but also of reflection- and reminds one that while youth is fleeting, and life is short – it can be full of beauty.
