Additional Information

Patterns of the Forest is a bit of a departure from my usual way of working.  I wanted to take my interest in natural patterns into more of a landscape subject and working in a larger size to give scope for exploring many textures and patterns.   When I walk through one of our subtropical rainforests here in the Gold Coast hinterland I often become overwhelmed with the richness and depth of pattern in everything I see, ranging from the largest towering tree to tiny lichens and everything in between.  It’s a bit like fractal geometry — patterns within patterns within patterns.

In making this work I first spent many hours creating a stack of new stencils based on the patterns of lichen, bark, ferns, fungi and so on. I wanted to concentrate on all the various patterns of the multitude of living things that make up a rainforest. Each section of the painting was masked off and stencilled in turn. After that came a lot of over painting in oil (the surface is intensely worked on over all)  including several rainforest animals.  In the end I could not leave out my birds, and also a tree frog, if you look hard.

Mixed media – acrylic aerosol and oil on canvas, created with high quality archival materials. stretched on a timber stretcher, unframed, ready to hang.
