Additional Information

‘Monique’ is a particular favourite of Jasmine’s. This portrait artwork is centred on the face, large and commanding. The expression is difficult to ascertain – some think she’s been crying and her mascara has run from the tears whilst others think she’s been sweating it out on the dance floor. Exactly what her emotion is, is up to the viewer.

This particular portrait artwork is created with ink on paper. The technique is simple shading and scribbling with ink pens. Up close, you can see every single scratch and pen mark, but from a distance these marks melt together and you get the overall effect. To further highlight the running mascara on her face, Jasmine has added pure silver leaf foil to the paper. The silver leaf looks different in different light – sometimes it is brightly reflective while at other times it is dark. This gives the artwork a certain degree of life in that it constantly changes across the day.
