Medusa by Natasha Zraikat. This is my depiction of Medusa, and is a painting from my ‘Modern Myths’ series. This story has always been of particular interest to me. According to Greek mythology, Medusa was a monster, a Gorgon, with living venomous snakes in place of hair. Those who gazed upon her face would turn to stone.

A lesser know fact is that in some versions of the myth, Medusa was originally a very beautiful maiden, “the jealous aspiration of many suitors,” but because Poseidon had raped her in Athena’s temple, the enraged Athena transformed Medusa’s beautiful hair to serpents and made her face so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it would turn onlookers to stone.

This painting is unique in that it is embellished with golden paint, in the subject’s eyes as well as her clothing. This creates an eerily beautiful effect when looking at the artwork. As you move left to right, Medusa’s brown eyes gradually transform, and begin to glow in bright, striking gold. This added dimension helps to bring the artwork to life, giving it a distinct other-worldly feel. I have tried to capture this as best I can in the photos and video.
