Magnolia no 5 by REK

REK continues his ongoing study of the hypnotic magnolia flower in large scale, bold abstract work, Using multiple mediums on gallery quality stretched canvas.

Acrylic paint is the dominant medium, mingled with graphite, charcoal and acrylic pen. The artist’s gregarious nature is embodied in this recent work. The liquified paint drops emulate cascading water and bring movement to the piece which celebrates spring time and the hopeful dawning of a new chapter post covid lockdowns in Australia.

The citrus scent and beautiful cream flowers of this tree last only a day or two, making their achingly beautiful and structural blossoms even more captivating as a result of their temporary nature – REK explores the briefness of beauty, in only a day the blooms turn from Creamy white to rusty orange. The artists collects these blossoms from trees adjoining his studio and over the course of the art works creation, they open causing the fluid change of the painting as it progresses. As the petals REK captures the changing structure of the flowers using loose outlines in acrylic pen or other medium,  worked over the top of the layers set down the previous morning.
