Additional Information

This piece is based upon the mystery of the Ninth Roman Legion, all of whom disappeared into the wilds of Scotland past Hadrian’s wall. In Rosemary Sutcliffe’s book The Eagle of The Ninth, a young man goes in search of the Legion’s Standard- an Eagle. Historians have several theories as to the Legion’s whereabouts- from their being killed by local tribes to voluntarily disbanding and going home.

To bring the story to life, I’ve made my eagle a real one- and put the setting in an evocative landscape. If you’ve travelled to Scotland, you might have been to the eerie valley of Glen Coe. The mountains in this picture are inspired by that spot, as well as the standing stones that litter the British Isles.

The vibrant colours in this painting put a different spin on an old legend and give a nod to a dramatic landscape.
