‘Looking Back’ by Eva Horvath
‘Looking Back’ is a large-scale painting in oil paint and mixed media on stretched canvas.
The image was inspired by a vintage home styled by #design&diplomacy that looks back at a bygone era in architecture.
To reflect some aspects of this character-filled interior with its blackened old brick fireplace and peeling walls, the artwork has been created in a ‘shabby chic’ manner with painted surfaces built up with layers of dappled, drippy and scratchy paint combined with pastels and charcoal. Some of the raw canvas has been allowed to show through the painted areas.
The artwork is about more than just trying to capture the romance of a bygone era.
It is about creating drama through strong composition, angles and lines, painterly surfaces and dramatic use of light. All these elements have been designed to work in harmony with each other and ultimately lead the eye to the centre of interest – a decorative ceramic bowl displayed on an antique sideboard.
