Usually it’s the brightly-coloured male wrens that get all the glory – I wanted to show the simple, delicate beauty of the female fairy-wren.
I took the reference photo for this painting at Brisbane’s Oxley Creek Commons, in the amazing sunset light. I loved the play of blue shadows on the little wren, catching the last warm glow of the sun, and especially how the blue branch shadow fell across her. I was really drawn to the colour and warm/cool contrasts in this image. This is my second painting of the same subject (different pose).
