Kookaburra Ochre – Original vibrant watercolour painting on extra thick cotton paper. This work featuring a Laughing Kookaburra in a forest scene is inspired by the wild overgrown gardens in my local urban neighbourhood. Botanical elements include; ferns, vines and gum leaves in beautiful hues of blues, greys, burnt sienna and yellow ochre.
I have always been fascinated with natural history books/antique botanical illustrations, and this painting is a modern take on the captivating work of those early illustrators such as Gould and Audubon. This painting is from a larger body of work I am currently exploring, the works in this series focus on the unique characteristics of watercolour as a drawing medium – it’s flexibility, fluidity and somewhat random/spontaneous role in image making.
