Kicking Up Dust by Bethany Massey – The Story:

This painting was created from using my own photograph as reference. The subjects were competing in the Barrel Racing at the Morisset Rodeo, NSW in the heat of summer of 2018. Note that this painting is on glass, and the appearance of the image will change depending on the lighting used. In the product gallery you will see a few different lighting scenarios. I would prefer this painting to be displayed with a natural light source filtering in from behind (such as a shelf near a window as pictured). Images have been provided for example. In a gallery setting, this image is displayed with an LED mounted behind the frame.

Materials and Process:

The process begins with a piece of cut glass, which is cleaned and let dry. Then a sheet of paper-thin Cherry wood is affixed to the glass with adhesive. The painting process begins with a thin layer of white acrylic, which only covers the area of the subject. This is to create a brighter and ticker base and help the colours stand out on the top layers and also to block light coming from behind distorting the subject. After a few days drying, the oil is then applied to the acrylic base. The oils are painted in layers with the details building as I go. The oils must them be left for many months to cure, after which, a layer of gloss varnish is applied to the whole surface.
