Kati Thanda, by Grayson Cooke

Limited edition (50) photographic print, 100x100cm on Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre 310 Gsm. Available unframed as well as mounted.

Select from two styles – Unframed on Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre 310gsm – requires framing to hang, or

Printed on Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre mounted on 3.3mm aluminium panel – ready to hang.

This is an image from my “Invalid Data” series – it is an image of the incredible salt lake Kati Thanda / Lake Eyre, in outback South Australia; but it uses infrared light to render the colours in the image in a pretty crazy palette, where the ground is turquoise, water is black, salt pans are red and clouds can be anything from yellow to orange to pink to blue.

This image has been shown in some pretty cool places – it was in the Alane Fineman Award in the Ballarat Foto Biennale, in the Head On Photo Festival, and it also showed in this huge church in Groningen, in the Netherlands, in the Noordelicht Festival.

What’s cool, is that what we are seeing is indeed “invalid data”; this is what geoscientists consider waste data. Because clouds cover over 60% of the Earth at any one time, the satellites used by geoscientists to monitor the surface of the Earth, take vast amounts of images where clouds obscure a clear view of the Earth. The clouds are then filtered out, pixel by pixel, with all that cloud data, the “invalid” data, being placed to the side of the data used for environmental purposes.

This image is what you get when you ask the Digital Earth Australia database to give you invalid data only.
